Why You Need To Be Careful When Opening Up The Ports On Your Windows 7 Firewall

One of the most important things that you can do to improve the security on your computer in this day and age is to set up a firewall on it.

Every day there are people running scans on wide swaths of IP addresses, just hoping that they can get a hit on one of them.

After they are able to get this hit, they will do their best to try and get inside of the network.

Once they are in it, there is no telling what kind of things that they are going to do while they are trespassing.

To prevent this from happening you need to make sure that you have a firewall up and running.

You can either buy a firewall (they typically come bundled with internet security suites) or you may have one available within your operating system.

Luckily for you, the last three versions of Windows have come with a firewall already installed.

In earlier versions of Windows it could be argued that the firewall was not as secure as perhaps it could have been.

Windows 7’s Firewall Is One Of The Best Around

That has changed for the better, however, with Windows 7 – you now have one of the most secured software firewalls that has ever been released.

And I don’t just mean by Microsoft – the firewall in Windows 7 is one of the best around.

When you are on the online there are certain programs that you use that need be able to communicate with the internet.

These programs include certain video games, chat clients, Skype, and a lot of other software that you might need throughout the day.

So for you to be able to have your programs communicate with the outside internet, you have to open up a port for them.

Once this port is open, the program will be able to act as if there is no firewall at all on the computer.

The outside world will be able to communicate back and forth with the program, no problem at all.

There is one problem with opening ports on your firewall though – it becomes another hole that you are opening up in your defences.

The purpose of a firewall is to try to limit your exposure on the internet.

You do not want just anyone to be able to get into your system.

But each time you open up another port, you allow the possibility of that happening so do not take the task of opening up another port lightly.

Even With A Firewall You Still Need To Take Some Responsibility

Before you decide to give a program access to the world outside of the firewall, make sure that the program is reliable.

Also make sure that you keep track of how many ports that you have open.

There a lot of ports that are available to you and some of the programs may ask for more than one.

Just make sure that you are not opening up too many of them.

You are going to have to open ports for certain programs so that you can properly use the internet.

Just make sure that you are careful and that you have properly configured your Windows 7 firewall and you should be fine.
