Downloader.Waledac.C is what is known as a Trojan. For the most part, the Waledac Trojan is used as a part of spambot network in which infected computers are used for sending out a barrage of spam emails. It may also be utilised along side other Trojans to disable security settings in order to allow them to get onto your system without you realising.
The most common way for this Trojan to find it’s way onto your system is through malicious links contained in emails (you never click on suspicious links in emails do you?). As soon as the Waledec Trojan has found it’s way onto your PC it will mess with the registry, turning your computer into a spambot, passing the same dodgy email onto others. This is another reason why you should always have a good quality and fully updated antivirus program or internet security suite installed on your computer at all times.
Have you been infected by a Trojan such as Downloader.Waledac.C?
There are many signs that may indicate that your PC has been infected with a Trojan such as Downloader.Waledec.C but these indications can be due to other causes too so they are not entirely conclusive –
Slow System Performance:
Many Trojan horses are poorly programmed and can cause slowdowns on your computer, or they may lead to instability or crashes. Of course other programs, even legitimate ones, can sometimes have the same effect and hardware issues could also be to blame here as well.
Poor internet connection:
Trojans are in constant communication with their control centres on remote servers so they will be making use of your internet connection throughout the time you are on your PC. This, of course, will have an effect on the speed you experience whilst surfing the net. Again, poor internet speeds have many other possible causes too so having a shoddy connection doesn’t necessarily mean that you have a Trojan on your system.
If you press Ctrl + Alt + Delete you can start Task Manager. Click on the Networking tab at the top and you will see a graph and text that will tell you what is going on with your network adapter(s). If you disconnect from the internet and shut your email client down then there should be little to no network activity going on. If that is not the case then that could be another indication that there is indeed a Trojan present on your system.
- you may receive fake security warnings, possibly enticing you to but a fake antivirus program
- you might start seeing a large number of pop up ads whilst surfing the net
- your security software may discover a Trojan that is difficult to remove
- your computer may become infected with a whole lot more malware in a short space of time
If you are unfortunate enough to be infected with Downloader.Waledac.C then that will mean that a hacker has total control over your computer system and that is definitely something you don’t want!
Make sure that you always have good quality security programs installed on your computer. Keep them fully updated and run full system scans on a regular basis.
