Why Did I Suddenly Lose Loads Of Twitter Followers?

Don’t sweat, its nothing you said.

If the number of people following you on Twitter has dropped significantly then it isn’t because they all suddenly found a copy of your real picture or read that tweet about your smelly socks.

Nope, its because Twitter nuked them into oblivion.

Twitter is currently correcting data inconsistencies in user’s follower counts, the company announced today:

For some time, the follower and following counts we display have been incorrect for some folks.

We’re soon to push a change that will address this issue.

This means that the count you see in your sidebar should match what you see on your follower and following pages.

Twitter has warned that as it fixes the errors and purges the system of spam accounts, follower counts will likely drop for some people, especially those who have a larger than average number of followers.

Personally I think this initiative is welcome and perhaps long over due too.

Recently Twitter had become rather bloated with accounts that offered very little value and I for one will be glad to see the back of them.

Have you seen a large drop in the number of people who follow you on Twitter?
