The Top 5 Movies About Hacking

If you are into computers then I am sure that there is a certain movie that might have helped sparked that love for them (Wargames did it for me).

Sure, there are other sources of inspiration that could have made you make the move into computers, but I am sure that there is a movie that helped push it along as well.

Those of us who use computers for a living complain all of the time about how fake the movies make the hacking experience seem but it usually doesn’t matter; we still enjoy it and have fun watching them.

I have made a list of five movies that any hacker that claims the title of “hacker” should have seen.

Even if you didn’t like them, you have to be able to say that you saw them at least once!

hacking-movies

Swordfish

The first on my list is a movie called Swordfish.

It stars Hugh Jackman, Halle Berry and John Travolta as spies and hackers trying to get into a bank vault.

The movie is filled with all kinds of ridiculous scenes like him being able to hack while “under pressure” (if you saw the movie, you’ll know what I’m talking about and why I can’t describe it more here) but the movie is still good fun.

If you are looking for a fun, but in no way realistic, movie about hacking then this is one that you should watch.

Revolution OS

Hackers are not only people who break things; they are people who create as well.

This movie is all about the creation of a revolution.

Revolution OS is a documentary about the creation of Linux and how it became popular in mainstream society.

What once started out as a niche OS is now on millions of servers, home computers, and mobile phones around the world.

If you want to see a big piece on how this all happened then it would be a good idea to watch this movie.

The Net

This movie was released in the very beginning of the 90’s computer revolution and, while being very cheesy, it was able to capture the attention of millions of computer fans around the world.

It starred Sandra Bullock as a computer researcher that had her identity erased by the use of a computer.

While this movie might have made a little more sense in this day and age considering not everything back then was digitized yet, it still made for a great popcorn summer movie.

Again, if you were looking for realistic hacking then this is not the movie to watch.

But for entertainment sake you will love it.

Hackers

There is no other movie on my list that you will hear quoted in the hacker community as much as this movie.

Starring a very young Angelina Jolie, this movie was one of the first movies that tried to make hacking look glamorous.

While all the people who work in computer security scream how much they hate the movie, they somehow know every word of it – I guarantee that is not from watching it only one time!

This movie will always be a hacker classic.

The Matrix

This is the last movie on my list and I guarantee that there is no need for me to describe it.

This was one of the most popular movies of all time and, even though the sequels did not live up to the hype, people still loved the first movie.

If you are a computer hacker, then you know that you want to be Neo.

This is the list of movies that anybody who call themselves a hacker should have seen.

If you’ve missed any of them then you know what you should be doing tonight.

About Lee Munson

Lee's non-technical background allows him to write about internet security in a clear way that is understandable to both IT professionals and people just like you who need simple answers to your security questions.

Comments

  1. Wargames and Antitrust should be here too…

  2. Tron, Die Hard 4,
    Transformers, Mission Impossible.
All have hacking scenes, thought they might be worth a mention.

  3. Good list Lee,, only one i havent seen is Revolution OS.

  4. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0126765/

23, a german movie about real hackers selling some information to Ivans (KGB).

    • Thanks for the recommendation Robert. Not sure my German language skills are good enough for watching that one myself though :(

  5. Fernando Alexandre says:

How could you *not* mention Takedown? http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0159784/

Its about the story of kevin mitnick, so its very realistic tecnology-wise and the acting itself is very good. Beats Hackers easily.

    • I’ve not seen Takedown myself but can imagine that it would be a good pick.

‘Hackers’ is one of those films that just had to be on the list – its a classic!

    • With the feedback I’m getting fro various sources I think, perhaps, that I should have put Sneakers in the list!

  6. I think you missed a key one – WarGames… I mean, what is better hacking than nearly starting thermonuclear war?
We did a list of our top hacker movies & books last year: http://securitymusings.com/article/775/hacker-movies-and-books

    • Well I kinda mentioned it in passing right at the beginning of the article – its the very film that piqued my own interest in computing.

Just looked at your list and saw you have ‘Sneakers’ which is one several other people are mentioning too.
