in Internet Hoaxes

If you receive an email, such as the one below, then you may feel concerned about your internet security -

Important!!

Better safe than sorry!!

Send this onto your friends

IF THIS PERSON CALLED SIMON ASHTON (SIMON_25_@HOTMAIL.CO.UK) CONTACTS YOU THROUGH EMAIL DONT ACCEPT HIM. DELETE HIM BECAUSE HE IS A HACKER!!

TELL EVERYONE ON YOUR LIST BECAUSE IF SOMEBODY ON YOUR LIST ADDS HIM THEN YOU WILL GET HIM ON YOUR LIST. HE WILL FIGURE OUT YOUR ID COMPUTER ADDRESS, SO COPY AND PASTE THIS MESSAGE TO EVERYONE AND FAST BECAUSE IF HE HACKS THEIR EMAIL HE HACKS YOUR MAIL TOO!!!!!..

After all, no-one wants to have their, or their friends’ accounts, hacked.

However, common sense should out this email as a hoax because there is no way that someone can access your email account simply by knowing your email address.

(Of course, they could trick you into installing malware, or phish passwords and logins from you, but that’s a different matter).

Of course it can, it has been confirmed by Microsoft and Norton. it is REAL!

You guys don’t know what you are talking about. All my friends got this warning too, so it is real. I don’t know why the police just don’t arrest simon ashton?

Lol, I agree, not all advice is good. As you say, this cannot work in the manner described in the email.

Judging by the number of visitors to this post I think it is being distributed quite widely at the moment.

Yes I just recieved it too. It seems that these sort of emails tend to scare people into farwarding to all their contacts. Need to be careful of that because usually they have a hidden motive which may infact simply be building a email list? In any case I agree If you have a good firewall you dont need to worry about these sort of threats unless you let them have access. by giveing away your passwords or
    othere sensitive info.

I’m not sure I get your point about building an email list – if it’s being forwarded then the original sender is not going to be notified of all the new recipients is he?
