The Best Antivirus Programs For 2011 – Vipre Antivirus

Today’s antivirus review sees me looking at Vipre Antivirus from Sunbelt Software.

{Vipre (Virus Intrusion Prevention Remediation Engine) Antivirus for 2011 is also known as Vipre Version 4.}

One of the key selling points for this package is the “unlimited home license” deal that allows all of the computers in your house/home office to be protected for just $49.95 – if you and your kids have a large number of computers between you then this particular deal may well make Vipre the most cost effective solution you will find.

Personally, I like my antivirus programs to have an uncluttered and simple to use interface and Vipre Antivirus doesn’t disappoint in this regard.

I like the interface as it is well laid out and easy to understand.

It is neither too cluttered nor too bare and all the functions you are likely to use are just one or two clicks away.

Once set up, this is an antivirus program that can be left running in the background with very little further input from the user.

Like any good antivirus program, Vipre Antivirus offers protection against a large array of threats.

These include all of the usual suspects –

  • viruses
  • rootkits
  • spyware
  • keyloggers
  • adware
  • trojans
  • worms
  • etc.

Vipre Antivirus also utilises advanced heuristics to enable a level of protection that may not be achievable with traditional signature-based technology.

Add on kernel-level antivirus security and Vipre Antivirus has all types of threats well covered.

During the scanning process I always like to multitask to see how the computer’s resources fare during the process.

I found that Vipre used a lot of memory on my particular system but CPU usage was reasonably low, meaning that I was able to continue using my laptop without noticing too much of a slowdown.

As soon as I had installed Vipre Antivirus the program prompted me to search for updates which is always a good sign.

After that first update all future ones are set up to run automatically, every few hours, though it is possible to look for them manually at any time too.

As with other antivirus programs, Vipre makes updates available as soon as new threats are discovered.

I’ve had a few dealings with Sunbelt recently about unrelated matters and have been impressed with how fast they act and respond to queries.

From that I would guess that any customer service issues would likely be dealt with just as quickly and efficiently too.

If you need any support with Vipre Antivirus then there are a few different options available, such as a user guide, knowledgebase and support forums.

Additionally, specific queries can be dealt with via email, online chat or by a phone call.

Vipre Antivirus has a couple of interesting features that I liked but it also misses one that I think is essential nowadays.

Active scanning of emails will keep your system safe from malware that comes via your inbox.

There is also a secure file eraser that is useful addition as it allows you to completely remove any sensitive files that you wish to permanently erase from your hard drive.

On the downside, I couldn’t find a setting for gamers so, though I never experienced it, I wonder if I’ll ever get any messages pop up during a gaming session?

Vipre comes in two flavours –

Vipre Antivirus + Antispyware offers protection for one PC for one year for only $29.95.

Vipre Antivirus + Antispyware + Firewall is just $39.95 for one PC for one year.

Vipre Antivirus appears to require quite low system specs to run which should be good news to anyone running an older system.

The minimum required specs are as follows –

  • Windows 2000 SP4 / Windows XP (32- and 64-bit) / Windows Vista (32-bit and 64-bit) {Windows 7 isn’t mentioned so I’ll have to find out if Vipre is compatible}
  • 512MB of RAM
  • 150MB of free hard drive space
  • Internet Explorer 6 or higher must be installed, but not necessarily used
  • Pentium processor

Overall I rather like Vipre Antivirus.

It is sufficiently efficient that I can carry on working whilst a scan is in progress and it offers a full range of protection against the latest threats.

The interface is clean and easily navigated.

The lack of a gamer mode is a shame for me but many other potential users wouldn’t be bothered about that at all.

Lastly, the price is good if you are a home user looking to protect just the one computer.
