The Best Antivirus Programs For 2011 – F-Secure Antivirus 2011

Update: This program has been replaced with the new F-Secure Antivirus 2012.

Today’s review is of the latest antivirus program from http://www.f-secure.com.

F-Secure Antivirus 2011 is a great desktop security solution and one that I was able to get to grips with very quickly indeed, not only because I use F-Secure’s Internet Security 2011 on my own desktop, but because their antivirus program has a very simple interface.

F-Secure Antivirus 2011 interface

Interface

As I said before, the interface on F-Secure Antivirus 2011 is very easy to get used to.

From the time you open the program up for the first time you will notice that there is very little on the screen which is something that will probably appeal to less experienced internet users who may get confused through having too many options to play around with.

That doesn’t mean that the program itself is too basic or simple though – F-Secure Antivirus 2011 has a strong engine and all the key functionality is there for those who want to get into the technical side of things.

The options that are available are well laid out and all the settings can be accessed through a few clicks at most with the essential functions all being accessible from the main screen.

F-Secure Antivirus 2011 scanning

Scanning

F-Secure Antivirus 2011, as you would hope, protects users from the usual range of nasties –

  • Viruses
  • Worms
  • Trojans
  • Rootkits
  • Spyware

Scanning can be performed in one of two ways – a scheduled scan or a manual one.

The image above is from a manual full scan that I performed straight after installation and the program got through the 40,000 + files on my laptop in a very short period of time indeed.

During the scanning process my laptop remained responsive and I was able to undertake other tasks which is always a point I look out for as some antivirus programs I’ve tested can leave the machine they are running on almost completely unusable during a scan.

Updates

After installing F-Secure Antivirus 2011 the program automatically updated it’s virus definition database immediately.

Thereafter the program continually updates itself at regular intervals throughout the day though you can search for updates yourself at any time.

F-Secure also offer a feature called ‘DeepGuard’ which gives users protection from newly discovered threats within 60 seconds.

Support

The support offered by F-Secure is very good and you shouldn’t have any problems in contacting them should you have any issues with their software.

If you need phone support then they are available 24/7.

They also have live chat available as well an an email support system.

Additionally, there is an F-Secure forum where questions are responded to quickly and they have a knowledgebase too.

Lastly, there is also in-product help in the form of a user manual.

Features

One of the most interesting features from F-Secure is one that I mentioned above – DeepGuard.

Whenever anyone opens an application or program on their computer DeepGuard 2.0 will check for any issues and will then report back to the ‘cloud’.

This means that if there are any security threats found with a particular app or program every other F-Secure users will be protected from that same threat within 60 seconds.

Another feature found with F-Secure Antivirus 2011 is it’s use of advanced heuristics.

Without getting too technical at this point, advanced heuristics is a feature that allows the program to protect you from viruses and other threats that may not be detected by scanning for traditional virus signatures.

Pricing

If you wish to buy F-Secure Antivirus 2011 then you will find that it is priced quite reasonably at $39.99 for US customers and £25.00 for those of you in the UK.

Compatibility

F-Secure Antivirus 2011 is compatible with the following versions of Windows –

  • XP Home / Pro / Media Centre
  • Vista (32-bit and 64-bit)
  • 7 (32-bit and 64-bit)

The program requires a minimum of 256MB of RAM (512MB for Vista and 7 users) to be installed, though 1GB is recommended.

You’ll also need to ensure that you have at least 600MB of disk space available for the installation as well as a CD-ROM and internet connection.

If you are using Windows XP then you will need a 600Mhz Pentium 3 processor or better whilst users of Vista and 7 will need to meet the minimum requirements as specified by Microsoft.

Conclusion

F-Secure Antivirus 2011 is an antivirus program that I like a lot, perhaps because I am already so familiar with it.

It is highly effective without being complicated and offers a good level of protection to those who want a security solution that they can install and then leave to get on with the job.

Considering the pricing I would probably suggest that F-Secure Internet Security is of better value but this antivirus program is worth the asking price without a doubt.
