‘Revenge Porn’ Site Founder Hunter Moore Pwrned In Defamation Case

Hunter Moore, founder of ‘revenge porn’ site IsAnyoneUp.com has been ordered to pay damages for defaming James McGibney the CEO of Bullyville.com.

dollars

The damages award has nothing to do with the site’s content though – Moore has been ordered to pay $250,000 (about £170,000) to McGibney (who bought the IsAnyoneUp.com fomain after the site was closed last year) after following comments made by him on Twitter.

Back in April last year McGibney had persuaded Moore to shut down his infamous web site in return for a nominal fee. Moore later directed something of a rant at McGibney on Twitter accusing him of paedophilia and owning child pornography –

“Moore’s world revolves around his Twitter account. It was horrifying to see how many of his followers retweeted his defamatory comments with even nastier ones. And then came the straw that broke the camel’s back. As if accusing me of pedophilia wasn’t bad enough, Hunter Moore threatened to rape my wife while my kids watched. He has now been served with a defamation lawsuit and has restraining orders filed against him in two States.”

Now it will be interesting to see what, if anything, transpires with the various people who retweeted or added to Moore’s social networking rant – my understanding of the law is that they are likely just as culpable in the matter.

In any event, this should serve as a reminder to all to be extremely careful what information you disseminate or echo online.
