Online Extortion Does Happen And You Should Make Sure You Watch Out For It

The best thing about the web is that it is filled with many different types of people that you can communicate with. It does not matter where you are at in the world, you will be able to talk to someone else who shares the same interest as you and you could become friends online. For some people this might lead to a lifelong friendship where they actually meet offline and for others it could lead to something that is more than friendship and they actually get into a loving relationship. But there is a dark side to be able to meet people on the web and unfortunately there have been too many people who have been introduced to this dark side.

On the web, as in life, there are terrible people that you may have to deal with. And the worst part about it is that you may not know that they are terrible people until it is too late. They might come off as a genuine good person and then you will find out later on that there is something rotten that is lying underneath their exterior. When you are in the real world it can be easier to tell how a person truly is by the way that they act and their body language. When you are online it is a lot harder to tell whether the person is truly telling the truth or not. You do not have the ability to be able to read their body language and see in their eyes. All you have to go on is the text that they send to you.

That is why when you do meet up with someone online who has negative intentions towards you it can be devastating. Because if you thought that they were a nice person and they truly were not, you could have accidently sent a lot of information about yourself to a person that was not who they portrayed to be. For example, if you are someone who thought they were having a loving relationship with someone else online and you sent them pictures that would be considered provocative in many corners. If the person truly cared about you then they would keep those pictures to themselves. But if the person was actually running a scam on you, then they would take the photos and demand that you pay them money or the photos would be distributed on the internet. While this may seem like a plotline from a movie this actually happens a lot in real life.

But it does not have to be someone who you are communicating who can take advantage and try to extort you. There have been many cases where black hat hackers have either found embarrassing data online about a person or they broke into a person’s computer and found the embarrassing data on there. And then they once again tell the person to pay them money to prevent them from showing the really embarrassing items online. Again, this may seem like something that only happens in the movie but it actually happens a lot in real life.

This is why you really need to be careful when it comes to potentially embarrassing data that is either on your computer or you sent to someone else online. If the wrong person is able to get their hands on it then that means you might have to either call the police or pay the money so that the world does not find out.
