Montana TV: The Hacking Dead

Have zombies risen from the dead? Are they attacking northern Michigan?

If you watched the local tv yesterday then you may be forgiven for thinking so after the Emergency Alert System kicked in and warned of an impending ┬ázombie apocalypse via the crawl strip and audio messages proclaiming that, ‘dead bodies are rising from their graves’ and ‘attacking the living’.

Anyone watching the Steve Wilkos show (see the video below) would have seen the warnings issued during an episode about teenage cheaters. But of course it wasn’t true and was, instead, the work of a hacker –

“Someone apparently hacked into the Emergency Alert System and announced on KRTV and the CW that there was an emergency in several Montana counties.

This message did not originate from KRTV, and there is no emergency.

Our engineers are investigating to determine what happened and if it affected other media outlets.”

Whilst I believe this was probably the work of someone who merely thought it would be funny I can’t help but think it would have been a good bit of viral marketing to mark the return of my favourite television show of the moment – The Walking Dead – which returned to screens in the US on Friday and finally reappears here in the UK on the 15th.
