Keeping Your Secrets Safe On The Internet

When it comes to keeping information tucked away somewhere, usually the place for you to put it at is somewhere digital. This is more true now than ever. We use our computers for everything these days when it comes to data and information. The main reason why we do it is for convenience. And another part of the reason why we do it is because we have so many devices to keep our information with. We have gone beyond just having to store everything on your desktop and laptop. Now we are at the point where you can walk around with a phone or with a tablet and you will be able to place your data on the internet anytime that you want. It makes life a lot more convenient but it also makes it a little more dangerous as well.

But when it comes to the information that we keep, one piece of digital information is not the same as the others. All data does not hold the same value but yet when it comes to storing the information on the computers we keep it the same. That is not the way we should do things. In real life you would not put your financial information in the same box that you put your baby pictures in. And you would not keep any pictures that you wanted to keep secret in that box as well. No, you would find a way to be able to separate that data so that only the appropriate people would be able to find it. So why are you not doing that when you are on your computer? Why are you placing all of your data in the My Documents folder on your computer (if you have Windows)? You really have to think about these things if you want to be able to keep your data safe.

So what should you do to keep your secrets safe?

If you want to be able to keep your secrets safe while using your computer you have to really start thinking about security. And we are talking about more than just using the password feature on a Microsoft Word document. No you really have to do more to make sure that any secrets that you have on your computer stay safe.

First of all, you should really look at some of the encryption software out there and see which one you feel comfortable in using. There are a lot of options on the market. Some of the options are free and some of the options you have to pay for. Make sure that the price of the software is not your only consideration when you are thinking about which one to use. You have to make sure that the product has a good reputation or you will find yourself in the same situation that you are already in. With most of the encryption options out there, if you are new to this kind of software it is going to take you awhile to get used to it. It is not easy software to deal with but it is not impossible either.

After you have your encryption software set up, now you need to think about placing any encrypted folders that you make in anywhere besides the My Document folder. That is the first place that anyone is going to look so make sure that you give them more trouble than that. Also you are going to want to be careful when it comes to hooking up to wireless networks. If you connect to the wrong network you can find someone trying to explore your computer very quickly. And the last thing that you want to do is to make sure that your security software is updated daily.

It is possible to keep secrets on your computer. You just have to make sure that you are not lazy and you get your computer ready to hold those secrets.
