Identity Theft – How Does It Happen?

Regardless of how many precautions you take, many people are still at risk of identity theft.

A scammer who is proficient at identity theft has many methods of acquiring your personal information –

  • stealing personal information from colleagues at their place of work
  • hacking personal files on a computer, either on the victims computer directly or via the internet
  • bribery – paying unscrupulous people to divulge your personal details
  • smooth talking the individual so that they reveal information themselves
  • Intercepting post, either by taking it from the postman directly, having it redirected elsewhere or by searching through dustbins
  • applying for your credit report and having it sent to their address
  • taking a victim’s bank or credit card details by skimming it or by using a lebanese loop or other device
  • mugging or burglary
  • phishing the details directly through email, phone or a website
