How To Visit Web Sites That May Be Dangerous

Curiosity is a human trait that is hard to get rid of. While sometimes it can be harmful to us and make us ignore our common sense, there are other times where it is good to follow our curiosity and see where it leads us. That is how we progressed as a society. It was the really curious among us that asked the hard questions and tried to answer them. That is how science works in its most basic format. And the attempt to get these answers is how we solve problems that we didn’t even know that we had.

While the average person might not be as curious as a scientist there is a little bit of curiosity in every person that is out there. Some people might have it worse than others but everyone has at least a little bit. And that includes people who surf the web a lot. And that is the big attraction of the web. No matter how many times you go on the web and no matter how many places that you surf on it, there are going to be places that you have never seen before. You just have to be careful when it comes to going to the different websites that are out there. While a lot of the websites that you visit will be safe there are going to be more than a few that are not safe as well.

So the question becomes how you do you stay safe on websites that you want to visit but they may be dangerous. There are just going to be some websites where curiosity takes over and you are going to want to see what is on that website. Even though you may have that voice in the back of your head telling you not to go to the site you are still going to go anyway. That is just how we are wired sometimes and we need a way to defend ourselves from these impulses.

The best thing that you can do when you are dealing with a situation like that is to learn how to visit websites such as these and still stay safe. You are not going to be able to avoid an interesting but potentially dangerous website forever so let’s show you how to keep safe on websites such as these.

First of all you are going to want to look at the virtual machine option. A virtual machine will allow you to run an independent operating system on top of the operating system that you are running now. And not only will it run, it will be able to take all of the damage that the dangerous site might do to you. But a virtual machine may be over the heads of a lot of the people who are reading this article. So let’s take a look at another way you are able to visit a dangerous website without your computer paying the cost in the process.

If you are using a browser such as Firefox or Chrome then you are able to use plugins that work with the browser. There are certain plugins that you can find that will allow you to be able to stop a lot of the attacks that you find on these dangerous websites. You will not be able to stop all of them but a good deal of the attacks will be stopped. The first plugin that you want to look is one that stops JavaScript from running on your machine automatically. JavaScript can be dangerous when you are on the wrong website. These plugins will allow you to white list the sites that you want to allow to run JavaScript.

That is just one of the many plugins that are out there. There are plenty more that will allow you to keep safe as well. Check them out and see what works for you.

About Lee Munson

Lee's non-technical background allows him to write about internet security in a clear way that is understandable to both IT professionals and people just like you who need simple answers to your security questions.

  1. The “noscript” extension is my favorite on both Firefox & Chrome. A bit inconvenient at first until you’ve “taught it” all the sites you trust, but after that, you browse without being paranoid.

As Lee says, there are plenty others too, if you have the time to dig.

One very useful one (though it only reports, doesn’t prevent) related to privacy & cookies is the extension by name “collusion”.
