How Can I Secure My USB Thumb Drive?

Almost everyone has data that they want to secure.

But when you have to take this data with you wherever you go, securing it becomes harder than ever.

One of the hardest things about keeping your data secured when you are on the go, is the format that you transport it in.

Depending on the format that you transport it in, if you lose it, then all of the data that is on there is up for grabs.

If you have sensitive data about your job or your own business, then you can be in serious trouble as you never know who is going to be able to get their hands on it.

This is especially true if you keep your data on a USB thumb drive.

99% of the machines that are out today are able to take the data off of a thumb drive and read it with no problem.

This list includes certain high end TV’s and cell phones too.

Luckily, with a USB drive, there are ways that you can keep it secured from intruders.

I will go over how you can do that in this article.

Securing Your USB Drive

I know you are expecting me to talk about a software solution that will be able to keep your USB data from prying eyes.

I will, but that will be later on in the article.

Firstly I will discuss now a hardware solution that might help you secure your USB thumb drive.

You can purchase a physical USB lock to protect your data.

I know it is hard to believe but there are USB thumb drives that have a combination lock attached to them.

Of course this is not the only security that you are going to want to have when dealing with your data but it is a great first step.

If you are afraid that by carrying your USB thumb drive around that you will lose it, it may help you sleep at night knowing that it has this physical lock around it for protection.

Now that we have the hardware solution out of the way, I can talk about a more traditional software solution.

There are a couple of ways that you can defend your data on a USB drive but they all come down to encryption.

You must be able to encrypt the data on the drive so that you can have some sort of security on it.

With this security you are able to lose the drive and not worry that anyone will be able to pick it up off of the street and be able to read it.

There are several solutions that you can use to set your drive up for security, but one of the best solutions that you can use is a piece of software called truecrypt.

This software comes highly recommended and it will encrypt all of the data on your thumb drive by putting it in a special folder.

Once it is in this folder, you will need a password to get it out.

Having security on your USB stick is crucial if you have any important data in it.

They are too easy to lose and there are too many ways for people to get the information off of them if they find it.
