How Are The Professional Hackers Protecting Themselves At Defcon This Week?

This week is a big week in the hacker community. It is a week that a lot of them have been waiting for and they love when it comes around. This week is the week of Defcon.

DEFCON

For the people who do not know, Defcon is an event where a bunch of people who are from the hacker community attend. There are both black hat and white hat hackers who attend the event so they can learn new tricks from each other. Of course there is more than just learning new tricks; they also get to socialize with other people who are interested in the same things that they are interested in.

When you are a person who uses the computer a lot and are interested in how the insides work, there are still not a lot of people who you can talk to about it, even in this day and age. So the people who attend Defcon love the fact that they are able to totally geek out with the rest of the attendees.

There is one thing that is a minor problem when you go to Defcon though – it is hard to use a computer without getting hacked!

Even the professional hackers must be careful!

So what should you do when you are at an event like this?

Russian Roulette

Stay away from the internet! This is the easiest advice that you can take. Going on the internet when you are at Defcon is like playing Russian roulette on your computer. You have to hope that you are lucky enough to not get infected by someone who is being mischievous. You have to remember that there are both good guys and bad guys at the event. And you do not know who is who. So you have to try and avoid being on the bad guy’s radar as much as possible.

If You Really Must Go On The Internet…

If you feel as if you must go on the internet while you are at Defcon then I have a few tips that you can use that might keep you safe. Remember, you are dealing with world class hackers at an event such as this, so nothing is fool proof. The first thing that you should do is to try and use a fresh computer at the event. Purchase a cheap netbook and go to the event with that. This way if someone is able to get into it they will not find anything of importance.

Another thing that you should do is to make sure that you log into every web site with a secure connection. This means that you should use a SSL connection to log in. Also, if you can set one up, use a VPN set up to surf the web as well. This will allow you to surf the web on your home connection while at the same time having a secure connection.

These are a few things that you can do to protect yourself on the internet. You may not be at Defcon but if it works for them, it should work for you as well.
