What competitions are out there that would attract security engineers?

That is a good question. If you want to be able to find people to work for you in helping to secure your network or computer system by looking at competitions, you have to know where they are at first. The first place that you are going to want to look at is competitions that happen online. The first type of online competition that you are going to want to look at is hacker competitions. Some of the competitions that you will find will try to induce competitors by offering money. Others you will find will try to induce competitors to join by offering the biggest challenge. The more challenging the attack the more online cred the person gets for solving it.  While a normal person might think that the contest for money will be the obvious choice to find the best and the brightest, that is not always the case. When you are dealing with the geek hacker culture, you are dealing with people who mostly already have a decent income and their main motivation is not money. Their main motivation is to be able to solve hard problems and let everyone know how smart they are.

Do not get me wrong though; there will be a lot of participants that fill out the forms for the paid contest as well. The statement before spoke to the mindsets of a lot of the elite hackers that are out there but there are plenty that want to see the money. There are plenty of pretty good hackers that will join a contest for a chance to win the prize money. That is without question.

The offline competitions you will find are many as well. Most of these types of events happen in major cities such as New York and San Francisco. There are places where people who are interested in technology like to hang out at and they will find ways to amuse themselves. One of these ways is through the use of competitions. Also some of the hacker conferences that happen throughout the year will also expose you to some of the best hackers around. All of the conferences have events to show off the skills of some of the participants there. You will be able to see for yourself how good a potential prospect is.

How to recruit one of these guys or girls to work for you

You have to remember that to make the job that you are offering more attractive to these guys; you have to offer incentives that will be interesting to them. You have to offer items such as a clean and open work area if you can offer it. Also people who are technology geeks love to work on the latest and greatest equipment. Make sure that you tell them what they will be working with if they join your company. Also it doesn’t hurt to mention a nice compensation package to them as well.

The biggest thing to attract a lot of them besides money is an interesting problem set. If you are dealing with someone who has several offers to work in different places then you are going to definitely want to help your recruitment drive by telling them the interesting problem sets that they will be working on at the job. Most of these people will take less money to be able to say that they work somewhere interesting. It happens all of the time in this world and you can use this to your advantage.

If you want to be able to recruit some of the best and the brightest in the world of computer security then you must be able to talk to them in their language. The more that they feel that you are giving an effort the more they will be susceptible to your message. And that is at least half the battle when you are trying to recruit.
