- Very good at blocking malware
- DeepGuard detects suspicious behaviour
- Simple interface
- Low resource usage
- Quick scanning
For the last few years I’ve been a huge fan of F-Secure as I’ve found their programs to not only be effective but also incredibly easy to use and extremely easy on system resources. Will 2013 mean more of the same…?
Will it run on my PC?
The minimum suggested system requirements for this program are as follows:
- Windows XP / Vista / 7 / 8
- 512 MB of RAM (1 GB recommended)
- 600 MB hard drive space
Is it easy to install this program?
Yes, very easy indeed. In fact I would say that is one of the major plus points of this antivirus program – its easy to put onto your computer as well as easy to use.
You simply need to click on the installer, decide whether or not to report usage data back to the company and then you’ll be up and running in around a minute or so.
This AV program is so easy to install that I think just about anyone, with any level of computer knowledge, could do so.
What is the user interface like?
As I mentioned in my review of F-Secure’s Internet Security 2013 program, the interface hasn’t evolved much at all over the last few years. It looks a bit tired now in my opinion but there are many plus points to the way things are laid out, the main one being the simplicity of use.
If you aren’t a whiz with computers then this interface will certainly appeal to you. Wherever you are within the program you will notice that there aren’t many things to click on and that will be a good thing for the non-experts amongst you – its very hard to mess anything up here!
Theres also a widget, aka the Launch pad, which can reside on your desktop. Personally I think these widgets are a bit of a waste as they tend to get hidden behind running programs and browser windows (especially if you are you a laptop or notebook) but some of you may appreciate the quick and easy access to the antivirus program.
What features does the program offer?
Over the last couple of years I’ve seen a trend begin with antivirus programs – more and more security companies are increasing the features they come with to the point where they are quite similar to the internet security suites of not so long ago. F-Secure doesn’t do this – it sticks to antivirus features only – but it certainly does that well.
As such, the features list here today is somewhat on the short side and is quite well described by these screenshot which show Statistics (above), the Status of your protection:
A few tools and settings:
And DeepGuard – a feature that enhances your security beyond the traditional virus definition database method of old. Using the cloud, DeepGuard will protect you from newer threats (zero days) very quickly after they are first discovered. This aspect is becoming increasingly important as newer pieces of malware are the ones most likely to catch you out.
The above, of course, are in addition to the antivirus and anti-spyware protection that you should expect to find in such a program!
Will it keep me safe?
Overall, yes, it will.
What I found with my testing here is that the program coped very, very well indeed with everything I threw at it, from viruses through zero day Trojans and onto Adware. F-Secure Antivirus 2013 blocked every single threat! On a system that I have which already has some nasties on it the program wasn’t completely flawless – it missed a Trojan. But on the whole this program performs much better than the majority of the competition.
F-Secure Antivirus 2013 isn’t completely perfect – no security program is – but it is very, very good indeed.
It missed a Trojan that was already on a system and the interface looks a bit old now but there is plenty to like.
Its effective against all the latest threats and a real simple pleasure to use. Even the resource usage, a bugbear of mine, is in the right place. Memory usage is low and CPU usage stayed low throughout a full scan, even when I started surfing the net and doing other things at the same time.
If you are an expert computer user you may appreciate an alternative with more features you can play with but, for the majority of desktop, laptop and notebook users out there, this is a highly recommended antivirus program and well worthy of a place at the very top of your shortlist.
