While you may not die from a crime pulled on you when you are on the web you can have your life ruined. And when we say ruined we mean financially, emotionally, socially and a number of other ways that can really hurt you for a long time. That is why it is just best to begin safe security practices when you first start to go online and then try to improve them along the way.

The first thing that you need to learn about is how to deal with a password. Your password is the number one way that you can stay secure while you are on the web. While you might need more than a password at times, for the most part keeping your passwords safe will be the thing that keeps you safe online. But there are a few rules that you have to follow if you want to be able to keep your password safe. If you do not follow these rules then having a password will not be enough. You will find out very quickly that there is a such thing as a weak password and a weak password is just like having no password at all.

The first thing that you have to remember when you are dealing with a password is to make sure that it is diverse enough. You should really not use words that you would find in the dictionary. You should also not use words that are not in the dictionary but might be from your favorite movie or book. Any information that might be well documented online is not a good choice for use as a password. Words like this will fail a dictionary attack test very quickly. What you should use is a word that is a mixture of numbers and letters. That way it will be a lot of harder for any computer to be able to guess.

The next thing that you should know about making a safe password is that it should be long. You do not want a short 4 letter password. Even an eight letter password is way too short. A good rule of thumb is that if you can remember the password then it is way too short. The only way a password is able is to protect itself from a computer being able to is by being both diverse and long.

And the last thing that you should remember when it comes to protecting a password is that you should not share it with anyone. You never know how that person is going to use the password when they get it. They might get mad at you and decide to abuse the privilege that you gave them. Or they might tell someone else the password on accident. Either way your security has been compromised due to someone else’s negligence. That is why you need to really keep your password to yourself at all time.

Password security is very important, especially in this day and age. When you make a password make sure you follow the rules and more importantly keep it to yourself.
