Did You Know That You Can Use Linux And IPtables To Build Your Own Custom Firewall?

There are, as I’m sure you can imagine, many different levels of computer user out there.

There are the people who use it a computer for work and usually have their eyes focused on a program such as Microsoft Word or Excel and then there are other people who use the computer for mostly creative purposes.

These are the people who you see working in Photoshop and creating nice looking web pages.

Then there are the people who like to get dirty with the machines.

They want to know every piece of the computer and make every part run efficiently.

This includes security as well.

Geekdom Rulez

When it comes to security, the person who is truly serious about their machine will usually not just stop at the normal antivirus and software firewall.

They will try to take things to the next level by introducing their own personal touches.

One of the ways that they are able to actually do this is by using a second computer and making their own custom firewall.

Since this article is aimed at advanced users, I will not go into too much detail of what a firewall is as most people who attempt to build a custom version will already know what it is.

But, for a quick refresher, it is simply a piece of hardware or software that guards the ports of your computer.

When you want to keep people from getting in and out of these ports then it is usually a firewall that is the best solution to prevent this.

Now with Linux you are able to create your own custom firewall that will completely bend to your whim.

Now you can feel safer than you ever have before.

IPtables And A Linux Firewall

You do not necessarily need a second computer to be able to do this but it really helps if you do.

You want this firewall set up so that it guards all of the computers on your network and not just the one that you are actively using at the moment.

To set it up, you must make sure that you have the latest version of the Linux distribution that you will use.

It is not completely necessary to have the latest but it helps a lot.

Now you will install a package called IPtables onto the system.

This is the actual firewall that you will be configuring.

Once this is installed you can start to make the necessary changes to protect your system.

When you set the IPtables, you are determining how the packet of data from the internet is going to travel through this system.

There are many advanced options that you must choose from but that is the fun of doing this.

These advanced options are what allow you to truly customize the system.

You are able to set the insides of a firewall so that it performs to your expectations.

Once you have made all of the settings that you like, you know that you will have a firewall that will filter the data as you always wanted.

Creating your own firewall is not an easy task at all – this software is not for beginners to use.

But if you understand network technology then you will find that, after a little while, you will start to understand the information that the software is presenting to you and you will be able to protect your computer with your own personal firewall.
