Cyber Security Awareness: Make Security The Entire Department’s Interest

As humans, we tend to do things better in groups. This all goes back to our days in primal societies. We would hunt together in packs. We would live together in communities. Pretty much everything that we did, we did in groups. There are some people who are exceptions to the rule and they like to work on their own more than in groups. They feel as if it is more comfortable and they are able to get things done better that way.

Those types of people tend to work on computers more than the average person. Whether it is in the IT field or when you are talking about programmers, many of these people tend to be loners. They like to work alone and they seem to do a lot of their best work that way. But that becomes a problem in a field like computer security. You need to be able to work with other people to make sure that everything goes right. You have to work with people who are both technical and non technical.

Are you cyber security aware?

Getting everyone involved

You have to make sure that everyone is involved when you are talking about computer security. If you have a job that is in an office building then more than likely the people who you are going to be working with are not going to be technical. As a matter of fact there is a good chance that these people are going to only know how to work with the internet and not much else. They might know how to operate Windows Office suite as well. But these are the types of people that you have to know how to work with. Each of these people are a security victim waiting to happen.

How to get them involved

The best way to get involved in computer security at the office is to set up at least one meeting a year. This is to remind people of the basics when it comes to computer security. Some people may forget the tips that you show them so you will have to remind them until they remember.

For a lot of people, the inner workings of a computer are very boring. And when you start to talk about computer security for them it gets even worse. The best way to be able to hold their attention is to show them how an attack would affect them personally. A person tends to hold their interest a little longer when they feel as if they could be affected by the problem. Even though these people work at a company they still might not take it personally if the company’s security is compromised. If you show them that the attacker could get personal information about them then they might take it a little bit more seriously.

You also should show them how it can be easier than they think it is to deal with security issues. A lot of people hate dealing with extra security because they feel that it takes up too much time. And sometimes it does. So you want to do whatever you can to help solve that problem. Some items are just going to take more time than others and there is no way of getting around that. But anything you can do to make the process easier will go a long way into making your job easier in the long run.

Computer security is a field that can be complicated but it is your job to make it easier to the uninitiated. If you are able to do that then you have done your job. When you make security an interest of everyone who works for you then you make it a lot hard for the bad guys to win.
