Choosing The Right Editor To Help You Both In Security And Your Programming Needs

If you work on a computer then you know that picking the right tools is a must. Just like a soldier has to be able to pick the right equipment that he needs before he goes to war a computer worker must do the same. If you are someone who is just going to do data entry all day then you need to make sure you have a firm grasp on how to use Microsoft Word. If you are someone who needs to be able to keep track of the expenses that a business puts up then you have to be sure that you are able to work with Excel. And if you are someone who is going to be editing configuration files and analyzing source code for dangers then you need to make sure that you have the right text editor to work with.

The different kinds of editors

Believe it or not there are many different kinds of text editors for you to use. And they all have different quirks about them. The argument that people have on which text editor is better to use is only second to people arguing about their religion. The battles do get intense and usually it is all for nothing. Everyone likes something different when it comes to the tool that they choose so it is useless to try and change another person mind. Now let’s give some examples of the different types of text editors for you to use.

If you are someone who likes to be able to edit their files fast then you might want to look at many of the simple text editors out there. Depending on what computer operating system you use, you will find many options. But the two biggest simple text editors that people go crazy for is both VIM and EMacs.

There are several reasons why these two programs are so popular. One of the main reasons is because you can find a version of each of them on any operating system. These two programs are so old that there has been a version made for every operating system out there. And we are not just talking about the major three of Linux, Windows and Mac OS X. The availability of the programs on so many systems means that if you ever have to use a computer that you are not familiar then you can just fire one of these programs up and you will be able to work with it just like you did on the system that you are familiar with. This can be very useful in the computer security world. When you are dealing with threats you always have to bounce around to different systems.

Another reason why simple text editors such as these two are so good is because they are very extensible. They start off very small but you can add a bunch of different plug-ins to them and all of the sudden they become everything that you need. In some corners EMacs is thought to be a mini operating system of its own.

The other types of editors that we will talk about are what are known as an IDE. The letters IDE stand for Integrated Development Environment. A program like this is still an editor but it also has many more features that are available to you. First of all, when you are dealing with difficult set ups such as you would in Java, an IDE would set up all of the boiler plate code that you need. This makes getting started on a big project much faster. You will also have plenty of template code that is available to you when you want to make a single file as well. An IDE will also have a debugging environment available in it. This allows you to inspect the source code and see if anything is wrong while it is running. Again this is great for people who are in the computer security world.

One of the more popular IDE’s out there is one that is known as Eclipse. It is available on all of the major operating systems out there and it also very powerful. Plus there is a large development community that surrounds it. With this community you are able to find a bunch of plugins that you can use. This community has formed around it because of its open source nature.

If you are in the world of computer security or just a programmer in general, then it will be up to you in which route you want to go. And as long as you are able to get your work done then it doesn’t matter which one that you pick.
