The rate at which computers are increasing their power has slowed down a bit in the past few years. And there is a real good reason for that. The reason why we have seen a slowdown in the increase in computer power is because most of us are at a point where we do not need a faster computer. When we are at home we are sitting behind a desk doing work on a computer that would be 10x stronger than the computers that put the astronauts on the moon. And since the most excruciating work that most people do on their computer is send emails to their friends and co-workers, there is not a lot of calls for computers to get that much faster anytime soon. While we will still see power increases, we will not see them jump as we have in the past.
But the one thing that we will see is the amount of storage increase. While we may not need as much power as we once did, the one thing that we do need is the ability to be able to store the data that we make. While it is great to be able to store most of our data on the cloud, even that is not enough for the amount of data that we make each year. We are going to have to buy external hard drives and bigger flash drives to be able to store all of this stuff. And it is not just the hard drives that are getting stuffed. We need more RAM to be able to process this data as well. Since we are getting more storage capacity, the people who make applications are making programs bigger as well. And if you want to be able to have those programs process more efficiently then you need to make sure you have the right amount of RAM on your computer.
Just in case you do not know, RAM is the place where your data on the hard drive goes to before it gets to the CPU. There are actually a few more steps but we do not want to get into that here. The fact of the matter is that the data is placed from the hard drive on to the RAM where then it is sorted to be processed by the CPU. And if a program is too big to be able to fit on the RAM that you have then that program is only sent to the RAM by pieces. That means you have a slower running program because it keeps having to access the hard drive, then RAM, and then finally the CPU to be able to run. That is why it is so important for people to get more RAM on their computer. That way you will be able to store bigger chunks of the program on your RAM and not have to keep accessing the hard drive.
But the problem with that is hackers love to be able to store data right on the RAM. That will it is not able to be found by the antivirus that is installed on your computer. Well it is not able to be found by most antivirus systems. So when you have a bigger block of RAM on your computer that means you have given more room for the black hat hackers to operate.
The one way you can avoid this problem is making sure you have an antivirus system that is able to check your RAM as well as your hard drive. And another way to stop this problem is to shut down your computer every now and then. Anything stored on the RAM will not live while the computer is not on. Data on the RAM is not like the hard drive and it will not live without the device being on.
