Accessing Your Data While You Are At College

If you are someone who graduated college a few years ago then you would probably be surprised at what the students on college campuses have at their disposal now. If you are parent who are now sending their kids to college then you would really surprised at what the college kids these days have at their disposal when they go to school. Just ten years ago it was considered to be revolutionary that you would see a school with a computer lab that could access the internet. Well that was at least the case on smaller campuses. Bigger schools have always had these resources. Now if you do not have several computer labs with computers that access the internet you are way behind the curve. Computers are a very important part of college life. That really makes sense because computers are a way of life when it comes to the world today.

And the fact that we have computers all over the place on college campuses mean that it only makes sense that you also have wireless access all over the place as well. These days’ colleges have internet all over the place and you can access them with whatever device that you have. If you bring in your own computer you do not have to wait in long lines to be able to access the internet. You can just set up the right password and you will be able to access it right there. But there is a danger in being able to access your data no matter where you are. That means you have to be able to connect to public networks that everyone else on campus is using. And that means you can have problems if you have someone on campus who knows how to abuse those same networks.

That is why if you are going to use those networks that are on college campuses you have to be really careful. While the people who run these networks try to do the best that they can when it comes to setting them up to be secure, there is only so much that you can do when it is a public facing network. You have to be able to make the network easy to access from the average person. If it is too hard too long into the network then the average student will not want to use it. So the people who run the network are always in a battle between security and ease of use. And most of the time you will find that ease of use wins out.

But that does not mean there is nothing that you can do to be safe. You just have to take a few precautions when you are on these types of networks. First of all you should be sure that you are logging in to your favorite website securely when you are on these types of network. Instead of typing http in your address bar make sure you are using the https version of the address. This will make sure you are logging in with an encrypted layer around your username and password. While not all sites have https login capabilities, most of the important sites that you visit will have this.

So if you are going to be on a college campus network and you are not that knowledgeable when it comes to computers, then do the little stuff to keep yourself safe. That would include making sure you use https to securely log into a website such as banking and email. That way you will be able to stop attacks such as man in the middle and others.
